Stepping into the gap is the mostly innocuous Horror Drive-In bulletin board, with its Rape Scenes thread.
This is one of the worst threads I've ever read, as it's not about the posters trying to shock one another, but just casual conversation. Obviously, sensitive people may wish to scroll past this entry quickly. Indeed, I think I'll stick in a cut, even though I never do that and have actually put code into my lj to automatically ignore cuts. Some thread highlights in response to a question of whether or not rape scenes are overused in "horror stories involving backwoods hillbilly types." We'll start off with the award winner for Most Profoundly Misplaced LOL of All Time:
My story October Roses had a woman raped by a rose bush do hopefully that was something a little different. Lol
and, file this one under No Girls Allowed:
I think a large part of it is the fact that we're men, so the rape isn't a danger to us.
Or maybe Boys Are Allowed
BUTT SEX!
The return of The Rosebush Guy:
I do find that sometimes the idea of anal rape of a man is much more upsetting to a straight fella than rape of a woman...so I utilize it from time to time in my stories.
Apparently, it can be a marketing problem:
Blood Born uses rape as a primary plot device, and at the time it was the most horrific thing I could think of. I think the first book trailer might not have gone over so well because of it. Further...I made that decision because I wanted to shock people, but I also didn't want to get banned from Youtube.
On the plus side, the YouTube poster did say that rape should not be written about lightly, which earned this response:
I disagree. I think you can have fun with it despite the subject matter.
And now, some racism!
I have a scar in the corner of my eye and a gnarly scar in my gut from stopping four illegal bean buckets from raping a 12-year-old neighbor girl. Plus Hey, Mexican Americans are my favorite people but the border-jumping law-breakers need to be shot.
And then, most of page four manages to be about the band Nirvana, oddly enough. And page five about DC punk—you know, the politically radical stuff. Way to pay attention, fellows!
