Kal-El? Always sounded Jewish to me...
Have you all seen the trailer for Jesus Christ, Superman?

Grant Morrison:
I don't want anyone to think I'm taking this literally - it's not like Jimmy Olsen's one of the disciples or Lois is the Magdalene - and imagine how diffferent Western religion would be would be if God had rocketed Jesus to Earth so that he could escape the destruction of Heaven...brrr... Superman is very different from Christ in that here we have a powerful redeemer who doesn't feel the need to sacrifice himself to get his point across. No-one has to die in Superman's name. Superman is a much more progressive figure than Jesus, and as a science fiction savior rocketed to Earth from a world of wonder, I think the character has the potential to transcend his humble origins and say something quite profound to those of us living in the secular 21st century.

He came back with a goofy Dennis Miller haircut and told everyone that the fortress of solitude medical facilities brought him back from the dead.

Kind of like when Jesus went to the Starship Enterprise and Beverly Crusher waved that blippy thing over him and he was fine.

Why isn't more slash fiction about that kind of thing?

I always thought that the Left Behind Series was ripe for Slash Fiction - especially when you name the main characters Buck and Raymond Steele. THey don't even need Dracula - er Nicolae Carpathia - to get it on.

You mean it's not slash fiction already? I thought I was reading the "edited for Christians" versions.

I think that was almost the whole point of The Adventures of Kavalier & Clay - that superheros were all Jewish wish fulfillment fantasies. Kind of like SUperman being the mild Clark Kent until he needs to show himself as the Moshiach and becomes a kickass Israeli soldier.

(of course I might be stretching the point - I did make http://www.superdickery.com the official Web site of [info]weirdjews2 after all.

Bad trailer in that it only appeals to diehard fans.

Sufficient teaser in that many, many people recognize the big-S emblem even if they hadn't heard that a Superman movie was coming out.

It'd suck as a full trailer, though.

I have been debating whether or not to ask the rabbis to let me use Kal El for my Hebrew name when I finally convert. I'll think I'll just stick with Tzvi Shalom as I originally planned.

On the other hands, my poor kids will just have to learn how to fight.

Although Nicholas Cage did it first (although naming a kid with TWO superhero names - and Luke Cage and SUperman aren't even in the same company or city)
